The Octopus in the background represents the ‘Bigger Picture’. Everyone on the boat is so distracted, the seated guy by mediocre things like newspapers/media, totally unaware that his hat is being stolen. The guy in the back of the boat is in the thick of it and is being taken but with the realisation that something out of the ordinary is going on. The guy in the front is totally distracted by the creature’s eyes, wondering what they are. The main point here is that we, as humans, are so unaware of the reality of what is going on around us that we just totally miss the bigger picture seeing only our immediate surroundings and circumstances.
